100 Islands. 100% Renewable. A Defining Moment for the Planet.

As New York Climate Week has just concluded, we can make some reflections on the outcomes: the urgency of a joint action is a must to save the planet. Climate change is not an invention of some scientists or a distant threat: it is here, it is accelerating, and it is tearing through island communities with rising seas, stronger storms and vanishing resources.

Islands, despite their vulnerability, are beacons of resilience and innovation. They are on the frontlines of climate change, but at the same time their leadership is charting the path to a sustainable model for the world.

This is the vision behind the 100×100 Campaign promoted by Blue Planet Alliance and Greening the Islands Foundation and launched at our Climate Talks in New York City: 100 islands going 100% renewable, making their commitment by 2030 based on a clear roadmap to complete the transition by 2045 or sooner.

It is a bold but necessary commitment, and it comes with immediate and lasting benefits: lower energy costs, reduced fossil fuel dependence, strengthened resilience and a model of sustainable growth that holds strong links with the UN SDGs and the 1.5°C goal.

But no one can achieve this alone. That is why the partnership with Greening the Islands Foundation is so powerful. Together, we’re creating a unique, globally coordinated framework for all those willing to support and replicate energy transitions to 100% renewables.

The 100×100 Campaign stands out as a unique and powerful initiative by forging a strategic alliance between two international leaders in island sustainability. At Blue Planet Alliance, we are building a community of islands that commit to 100% renewable energy, sharing lessons learned, best practices and peer-to-peer support through our Fellowship Program inspired by the pioneering experience of Hawaii. Greening the Islands Foundation brings the technical expertise, research capabilities and communications digital platforms that translate commitments into action by supporting feasibility studies, policy frameworks and the visibility needed to attract investment and scale solutions.

The goal is moving beyond fragmented efforts, uniting complementary methodologies into a holistic approach, enabling islands to commit to 100% renewable energy based on comprehensive, tailored roadmaps that cover technology, policy, and finance. This joint effort establishes a unique, globally coordinated framework designed to efficiently connect committed island jurisdictions directly with the essential stakeholders, expertise, and investment required for successful implementation and large-scale replication.

New York Climate Week has been an important moment to unveil this campaign and to show the world that islands are ready to lead. But this is only the beginning. Our journey continues at Blue Planet Alliance Fellowship Program 2025 October cohort (October 19th-24th in Hawaii) and at the 10th GTI International Conference (October 29th-31st in Gozo, Malta), where the “sustainable island model” will be at the center of discussions among leaders, innovators and communities. There, we will present concrete progress, deepen cooperation and accelerate the momentum created here in New York. These two key appointments will build momentum toward our global launch at COP30, with frontrunner islands alongside supporting stakeholders.

This is a defining decade. The actions we take now will determine whether islands – and our planet – can thrive in the future. The 100×100 Campaign is more than a pledge. We don’t have hope, we have determination. We need plans and deadlines, and through knowledge, finance and collaboration, we can build a world where islands are not only surviving but thriving, shining as beacons of what is possible when we work together with urgency and purpose.

We’re holding a promise – to our children, to our planet and to ourselves – that we will rise to the challenge. And we invite all islands, partners and supporters to join us in making this vision a reality.
